Hand-Tied vs K-Tip Extensions: Which Is Right for You?

A stylist’s guide to choosing your extension method.

One question we hear at almost every consultation at our Longwood salon is “Which extension method should I get?” Hand-tied and K-tip extensions are our two most popular options, and both give you natural-looking length and fullness. The right choice depends on your hair, your lifestyle and how you like to wear it. Here’s how they compare.

What are hand-tied extensions?

Hand-tied extensions are thin, lightweight wefts of hair placed in one or more rows and secured to a foundation in your natural hair. They lie flat and move like your own hair, adding noticeable length and volume. Our certified hand-tied extension specialists install them, and select stylists also offer a hidden beaded weft method for an even more discreet attachment.

What are K-tip extensions?

K-tip extensions, also called keratin-tip or keratin bond extensions, are small strands of hair attached one at a time with a keratin bond. Because each strand is placed individually, the blend is very natural and you can wear high ponytails and part your hair different ways. We density-match each strand to your natural hair to keep weight evenly distributed and protect your hair health.

Hand-tied vs K-tip at a glance

Choose hand-tied if you:

  • Want noticeable length or volume that looks natural
  • Have fine or thinning hair and want fullness without bonds
  • Prefer a flat, low-profile attachment
  • Are ready for regular maintenance appointments every 6–8 weeks

Choose K-tips if you:

  • Want to wear your hair up or part it different ways
  • Want a long-wearing option with fewer maintenance visits
  • Want added length, volume or pops of color without rows
  • Have curly or textured hair and want a custom strand-by-strand blend

Maintenance: what to expect

Hand-tied extensions need a move-up every 6–8 weeks, when your stylist moves your rows up as your hair grows. Our own line of extension hair lasts 8 months to one year, and you reuse the same hair at each move-up for its full lifespan.

K-tips don’t need move-ups. You’ll return for check-ins as your stylist recommends, and when it’s time, the bonds are removed safely in the salon.

How much do hand-tied and K-tip extensions cost?

  • Hand-tied extensions: from $300 for a standard two-row install (hair priced separately)
  • Hidden bead method: from $450 for a two-row install (hair priced separately)
  • Standard K-tip install: from $1,200 (hair priced separately)
  • Custom K-tip install: from $3,500, hair included. Includes curly K-tips, handmade bonds, custom texture and custom color blending.

All prices are starting prices and may vary based on your stylist and install details. A consultation is required for an exact price, and consultations are free.

Frequently asked questions

Which lasts longer, hand-tied or K-tip extensions?

Our extension hair lasts 8 months to one year with hand-tied move-ups every 6–8 weeks. K-tips are a long-wearing option with fewer maintenance visits. Your stylist will explain the expected wear for your install at your consultation.

Which is better for fine or thin hair?

Hand-tied extensions are a great option for fine or thinning hair because they add fullness without bonds. K-tips can also work well, since each strand is density-matched to your natural hair. Your stylist will recommend the best fit at your consultation.

Can I wear my hair up with extensions?

K-tips give you the most freedom to wear high ponytails and different parts. Hand-tied extensions lie flat and can be worn up too. Your stylist can show you which styles work best with your rows.

Do you offer extensions for curly hair?

Yes. Our custom K-tip installs include curly K-tips matched to your natural curl pattern.
